This new possible partnership comes after Ericson was part of a $ 3.6 billion contract that was signed last month. The contract foresees Ersicson selling equipment for India’s Vodafone Idea. Yet, the contract was shared with Nokia and Samsung.
Ever since 2023, the demand from the Indian 5G market began to skyrocket. However, this growth did not come alone as Airtel and Jio, the main telecom providers from India began to scale and implement 5G technology leading to a growth as big as five times more.
Ericsons’s primary market had a slowdown due to its main US telecom operators which have been lowering their spending. A CTIA survey shows a direct slowdown in the demand for 5G data usage. “The growth of 5G adoption in the United States has faced slow down in 2023, despite the record-breaking increase in wireless data consumption, CTIA survey shows.”.
In 2023, CTIA shows that in the United States, there were 216 million active 5G users, which includes all types of devices such as smartwatches, smartphones, and IoT devices. Those numbers indicate further that 5G represents 39% of the total wireless connection.
So, this can only mean that the majority of Americans rely on 4G internet connection and that all tries and investments made by US operators did not work. At a global level, the telecom equipment revenue had dropped 16% year over year in the second quarter. In their research, Dell’Oro also reported that this is the “fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit reduction”.
