Instagram, so, naturally, you open up Vine to see some funny videos of your friends.
Vine. What a time to be alive! Who doesn’t miss those amazing loops? Vine truly was one of the most exciting apps to ever grace our internet. But, I think it’s safe today, Vine came too early and disappointed a lot of us when it was canceled too early. So, if you are wondering When did Vine come out? Why did Vine shut down? Or when did Vine die? I am here to shed some light for you.
When did Vine come out? 2013. Oh, the times were easier back then! When did Vine die? 2017. It was down too early and it was ahead of its time. But how did it all start? Where did those best vines disappear and what happened to the vine stars we all admired?
The famous app was created by Three Bright Minds and its major success was secured by Twitter, in mid-2013 becoming the most downloaded app on the market.
And as with any social media platform, some “influencers” were birthed there. Therefore, it’s only right that we take a look at the Vine stars who got famous on Vine and where they are right now. Buckle up, and let’s take a trip down memory lane through Vine’s most popular content creators!
Logan Paul
Logan Paul began his career on Vine. Here is where he became a Vine star, gaining 8 million followers before the app closed its services in 2017.
When Vine was shut down he focused mainly on YouTube, where fame didn’t take too long to appear, being one of the most viewed people on the platform with billions of views. And, he took advantage of that, in 2016 being cast in The Thinning, in 2017 in The Space Between Us, or if you remember Valley Girl from 2020. Later on, focusing on his boxing and wrestling career.
King Bach
King Bach is an actor and comedian who originally rose to fame on Vine, where he posted funny videos in which he played various roles. He had one of the best materials on the platform, becoming one of the most notorious Vine stars. His Vines are still watched in the present on a variety of channels, mainly YouTube. With about 16.2 million followers, he became the most followed user on the platform at the time of the closure. Given that not many people were that “online”, it is impressive to see where the Vine era took him later on.
Since his career kind of blowed-up on Vine, he has been getting parts on television programs like Sneakerheads and also roles in movies like The Babysitter and its follow-up, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, which both were decently welcomed by critics and audiences alike.
But if you still prefer Bach in a short-video format, you can find him on TikTok! He has made it clear that he intends to keep producing content for his followers, including more original comedy featuring his own characters.
Brittany Furlan
If your comedic taste leaned more towards the absurdist, Brittany Furlan was a person that you should’ve followed on Vine. Her videos were shorter than a lot of creators, around 3 seconds. Still, it was almost impossible not to smile when she did quirky stuff like dancing with a rattlesnake or eating raw chicken with her hands. It may sound stupid now, but back then, this type of comedy combined with the short runtime of Vine was a match made in heaven!
What has she been doing since Vine? Well, she is still posting and has become an internet celebrity. On a personal level, she married Tommy Lee, the drummer of Motley Crue, and is living a happy life.
Rudy Mancuso
The social media influencer, Rudy Mancuso was absolutely one of the creators that really tried something different on the platform. His content was versatile and funny, never failing to put a smile on someone’s face. Even though Vine closed its gates in 2017, Mancuso was able to smoothly transition to other content-focused platforms like Youtube and Instagram.
One of Rudy’s famous recurrent content included singing and dancing with his mother. After Vine, he continued to pursue his passion for music while trying different art forms like film and TV.
What can we say? Rudy really made something of himself and knew how to take advantage of his early popularity as a Viner, even being cast a role in The Flesh.
Josh Peck
Peck is the exception in this article. Why? Because he was famous before Vine. Josh started as a child actor in famous TV productions such as The Amanda Show and Drake & Josh. His talent landed him a few significant roles in major motion pictures like Ice Age and After Dawn.
It was his content on Vine, though, that introduced him to a completely new demographic that fell in love with his hilarious content. However, he is still pursuing his career as an actor and social media influencer even today.
Nash Grier
Being the second most-followed person on the app, Nash Grier had a lot to live up to. His popularity transcended the Vine medium since he went on to appear on talk shows like Good Morning America. After the viral app was no longer in use, Grier redistributed his attention to other platforms, making a splash on YouTube, before transitioning to film and TV.
Moreover, Nash has done a little bit of modeling on the side. He is also engaged, and has two beautiful children, and is still pursuing his career as a social media influencer.
Liza Koshy
Liza Koshy had one of the smoothest transitions from Vine that we have witnessed. Known for her comedic short videos, the social media influencer created a YouTube channel that fairly surpassed her popularity on Vine. As with many content creators before her, she also focused on film and television. Koshy developed a web series, Liza on Demand, and starred in the Netflix hit film Work It. Recently announced that she will be a part of the movie Family Affair, playing alongside Nicole Kidman, Kathy Bates, Joey King, and Zac Efron.
Shawn Mendes
Shawn Mendes is only 24. I will let that sink in. It feels like he’s been here forever. But what most people don’t know is that his origins are from Vine. From his early days of posting music covers on the app - to create one of the biggest followings in pop music the previous decade, Mendes has kept himself busy. And, of course, he knew who to learn from. Back in 2015, he opened a lot of shows for Taylor Swift, which was on tour supporting her huge “1989” record. After that, Mendes started touring on his own, selling out stadiums around the world. He is probably the most famous Viner in the world.
Cameron Dallas
Nothing was better than prank videos on Vine. And Cameron Dallas was the leading content creator in that area. But what does the Vine star do now? Still, making pranks? Fortunately for his career, no, but he’s still a popular entertainer in the online world. He also dabbled in acting, starring in a few Netflix originals, but it never transformed into a full-fledged career. Cameron also shot his shot at some modeling gigs, but that never went anywhere, either.
Jack & Jack
The iconic Vine-duo Jack & Jack found a great platform in Vine. Why? Because it has tremendously helped their musical career. Their first single was released in 2014, and they continue to make music in the present. A Good Friend is Nice, the full-length debut album of the duo, failed to chart on Billboard but still had big success in Australia, peaking at number 36. We are still excited, though, to hear more from the Vine stars.
