e all know and love video games -that’s a fact. The early days of video games began in the 50s and evolved through the 70s and 80s when video games
started to slowly appear in our lives. Unlike what we see today, video games have simple graphics and concepts. They were built on simple hardware and used simple computing. Even more so, video games had limited interaction and mechanics that made the experience entertaining for that time, but by far incomparable with the video games we have today. Think of them as the early versions that helped us get where we are today
Arcade Roots and Coin-Operated Machines
Till we had video games in our home, arcades were the predecessors of video games. The first arcade was created by Atari and it was named “Pong”. It was a simple, two-player game that had become the first commercially successful arcade game. The arcade game appeared in 1972, and ever since they have slowly been introduced in bars and bowling alleys, leading to the creation of arcade rooms.
Fast forward to the late 70s, when game rooms also known as arcades became the hangout spots for a lot of teens. Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Asteroids were a few of the memorable games that changed the rules of gaming. Those games created a competitive space where everybody wanted to win, the highest-ranking places earning the bragging rights that everyone longed for.

After the rise of arcade games, the industry saw the need for a more comfortable solution for game players, bringing their favorite games home, and video games slowly started to make waves among enthusiasts. Early video games were based on accumulating the highest score possible, creating a true competition between players.
Think about video games such as Pac-Man or Donkey Kong, which created a space that felt more like a loophole. A neverending game that could have been played continuously, at least as long as you’ve had lives, the levels becoming harder and harder once you’ve got to a higher level.
However, the early ages of video games were built with limited hardware and technology, so, they did not focus on the design as video games do this day. They did not have immersive experiences and usually, early computers had very limited memory and small processing capabilities. Due to those technological capabilities, video games had to be small and occupy a limited memory space in order for them to be processed.
And, when it comes to sound and music, early video games had very basic sound effects that were usually a series of beeps and tunes. Space Invaders, for example, had at first simple sounds and music, but only in the 80s started to have a more complex soundtrack.
Video Games Genres
Video games although they had technological limitations, have created the genres we know and love today.
- Platform games. This type of game is characterized by levels that have uneven terrain and also have suspended platforms. Here, one of the first games is Donkey Kong, where players need to jump and climb from one level to another in order to reach their goals.
- Maze Games. We all know Pac-Man, the most notorious type of maze game. It has a simple strategy, as it follows the players in order to escape.
- Adventure Games. Everybody loves a good adventure, and the advantage of the Atari 2600, was one of the first of its kind.
- Shooter games. As the name suggests the action is pretty simple. Here we have Space Invaders or Asteroids, which are classic examples of early shooter games. In this type of game, the purpose is to destroy the enemy.
Coming closer to today’s video games, their styles and types have merged in order to create a more realistic and immersive experience for their users, one of the most notorious ones is Fortnite. We no longer have video games that only follow a strict pattern. Exploring games, battle royals, action, fighting, puzzles, sports, simulation, or anything you can imagine can become a game.
