The “hacktivist group” targeted Disney due to their concern about AI-generated art. “Disney was our target due to how it handles artist contracts, its approach to AI, and its pretty blatant disregard for the consumer,” the hackers told CNN in an email. Nullbulge protest claims to support artists’ rights and payment for their work.
In an email to CNN, hackers took control of the cyber attack on Monday. Nullbulge leaked around 1.1 terabytes of Disney’s Slack message, via "a man with Slack access who had cookies" and revealed that they are Russia-based. According to the email sent by the hackers, the Disney employee from whom the group gained access was aware of the hacking attempt and failed to stop the process.
Even so, CNN could not confirm the hacker's testimony. And on Monday, Disney stated that the company “is investigating this matter.”
Disney’s influence over the entertainment industry exceeded through many platforms. It ranged from ESPN to Hulu, and from Disney+ to ABC News. Nullbulge suggested the big reveal on their social media, in June, the hackers posted on X the visitor, booking, and revenue data at Disneyland Paris.
It is not the first protest in the United States about artificial intelligence, as this technology is easy to lose control of, due to its immense profit potential. In negotiations, between the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America (WGA), artificial intelligence became a central point of contention for a strike.
Writers are afraid that ChatGPT may cause their layoffs, and actors are concerned that computer-generated imagery, or CGI, can fully do their jobs. But, under the new Hollywood terms, studios “cannot use AI to write scripts or to edit scripts that have already been written by a writer," said a member of the WGA negotiating committee, comedian Adam Conover. For the moment, AI is negotiated to be a research tool that won't undermine a writer's work.
That’s why the hackers thought that a reconciliation with Disney would be pointless, thus leaking Slack message data. “If we said ‘Hello Disney, we have all your Slack data’ they would instantly lock down and try to take us out. In a duel, you better fire first,” Nullbulge said in their email to CNN.
