early on when the social media app was launched. A place where funny videos of your friends doing dumb activities were a normality and coffee photos were everywhere. Aesthetics were not the reason for posting a new picture, and influencers were not dictating the trends.
Social media suffered many changes since technology became the mainstream event every day. A social media presence has become our ID card, and younger generations are taking social media more and more seriously.
However, in more recent trials to make Instagram a safer space for its users, Meta decided that the purpose of the “Limits” tool would be extended. With this feature extended, users will now be able to restrict unwanted interactions and only receive and have interactions with their “close friends” group. This will limit messages, story replies, comments, mentions, and tags only to their “close friends” group, with other relations with accounts outside your “close friends” group being muted.
This new feature comes as a response to combat harassment that might be happening on the platform. The trials for this new feature started in 2021 after some of the members of the English football team were harassed online after the team lost the final at the Euro 2020.
This feature has now been added to teens' Instagram accounts and is now available by default. This update will still let other users interact with their accounts, but their activity will not appear in your feed and will simply be ignored by the app. Even more so, restricted users will be a feature available for recent users, too. So, Instagram users who have started following your account in the past week will automatically have limited access to your profile.
With these new features, Instagram is supposed to become a friendlier space where you can enjoy the time spent on the platform only with your friends and trusted close friends and group members. You will no longer have to worry about a platform that is not safe, but rather focus on the experience and enjoy a great time with your friends.
