Layoffs are no easy subject to talk about. We live in a society that is always changing so adapting has become our mandatory trait, especially when it comes to the digital field. The human species learned how to adapt, develop, and overcome all the situations and new technology that we have been put into or that we are facing. So, it’s only natural for us to try and find solutions for the layoffs trend as well.
We went from simple tasks that got us past survival to complex jobs that are now changing the society we live in building new technology, finding solutions, and discovering cures for diseases that we didn’t even know existed. Yet, looking back, and realizing that adapting and being prepared for new technology, AI (artificial intelligence), ML (machine learning), and new tech trends shouldn’t be an impossible task to do.
We all can agree that layoffs have been and will continue to be a sensible question that might look and feel terrifying at least. But, this practice has been part of the business world for decades. It was encountered during the Great Depression in the 1930s, we’ve seen it during the 2008 Financial Crisis, and we’re are still facing its scary image after the end of the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic. But, after all, we’ve experienced times when the global economy has been affected. It’s no surprise many companies were forced to cut jobs.
But in reality, layoffs have far-reaching consequences that affect entire communities, and it only worsens the economy as a whole. Layoffs were always present in our job environments even before the 2008 financial crisis or the Great Depression in the 1930s. Yet, things have changed and it seems like everywhere we look, layoffs seem to be what we are all more and more scared of.

1. Branding
The more notorious your value as a person and as a professional gets, the slimmer your chances of getting fired are. Think about it, the more you have heard about a person, the chances are that you will already try that their skills are better. And, this can be applied in every industry, as we tend to have more trust in a well-known figure. When picking a lawyer, a teacher, a new company to work for, or even the palace to do our shopping are chosen based on their reputation. So, it’s time you start building your own brand and gain notoriety in your industry to stay as far as possible from the layoffs trend.
2. Networking
Networking is never a bad idea. Building up relationships, talking about the subject of your work, and making friends in the industry can always come to your advantage. When talking with fellow colleagues from the branch you are activating in can help you stay up to date with what is happening in the industry. You know how it is – knowledge is precious and information is always welcomed regardless of the circumstances. Think about it, new technology insights or advancements on a digital platform can help you be prepared for what is yet to come, and in the context of layoffs, you will be prepared and have backup options.
3. Up to date
One of the mandatory features anyone needs to always keep in mind, especially in the layoffs trend storm is to be always up to date. Regardless of the industry, we are working in, we need to keep our skills sharp and prepared for any new technology, industry advancements, or anything that can appear. And, to do that we can leverage any means that can help us be in a continuous learning process. It can be either online classes, training, books, social media, news, or any place that can help you stay up to date. Social platforms can help you see and anticipate what the industry has prepared for you and can also encourage you to master the industry. Even more so, being up to date with all the details and insight in an industry will also get you the courage and stability you need.
4. New technology
Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and automation are what our future has laid down for us. And, learning their ways slowly became part of our job description. We shouldn’t be scared that automation, AI (artificial intelligence), ML (machine learning), and any new technology that comes around can affect us. We should be instead more focused on finding new ways in which we could combine automation, AI (artificial intelligence), and ML (machine learning) in order to become more productive and deliver faster and better solutions. We need to understand how automation, AI, or ML are entering our industry and see what we can do to make our work more efficient. After all, who doesn’t want an employee who is able to deliver the best solution and keep their skills sharp?
5. Proactivity
Being proactive can help us improve areas in our work and can also be the trait that keeps us away from the layoffs trend. Having a proactive mindset and behavior will help you develop the ability to act, take responsibility, and stay creative. Creativity is a characteristic that we all need to nurture and be mindful of. So, combining proactivity and creativity can only help us stay away from the negative impact layoffs can trigger.
Keep your calm! After all the industry is always changing and we need to be always on the same page with the technological advancements that are influencing the industry. And remember, layoffs are not the result of personal failure but rather of bigger forces at work. Even more so, if you find yourself in this position, remember to try and navigate this difficult period with optimism and tenacity. Pay attention to the practices we have offered you and try and keep your optimistic self out.
