eta Group which owns social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp plans to cut soon about 5% of the worldwide workforce based
on performance. So, employees with the lowest performances recorded will be included in the 5% Meta layoffs.
According to a memo sent to the Meta staff, Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Meta Group stated that this decision was made in order to prepare the entire company for a very intense year. He also stated that the company will hire other employees who demonstrate a higher level of performance to fill the job roles.
“I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster. “We typically manage out people who aren’t meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle.”, Mark Zuckerberg said in the memo.
It’s important to mention that he did not disclose how exactly these Meta layoffs will be distributed across the worldwide divisions since the Meta Group recorded about 72,000 employees globally in September. So, based on the announced percentage, about 3,600 employees will be affected by these layoffs, but according to Zuckerberg, the workers receive a generous layoff compensation.

Meta Group workers that are based in the United States will be notified until February 10, if Meta layoffs will affect them. For the workers that are located outside the U.S., the company will inform about the job cuts after February 10.
"This is going to be an intense year, and I want to make sure we have the best people on our teams,", he also stated in the memo sent to the Meta staff.
It should be mentioned that this year’s Meta layoffs represent the largest action of the Meta Group after the company cut 10,000 job roles in 2023 and about 11,000 roles in 2022.
Also, Meta Group has recently announced that it plans to stop fact-checking for social media posts and integrate political news in all social media platforms' Newsfeed sections in order to reduce content moderation policies.
When contacted, the spokesperson from Meta Group refused to comment about this situation.
