“moonshots”. Microsoft’s layoffs will affect Mission Engineering, estimating the number of layoffs reaching 1500 job cuts. The source of this information is an insider familiar with the matter.
As Business Insider reported, the tech giant is cutting off Operators and Mission Engineering teams, the teams being a part of the organization named Microsoft Moonshots. This organization was founded in 2021 and is named Strategic Missions and Technologies (SMT). Its CEO is Jason Zander. Even more so, another affected area is thought to be the department that takes care of HoloLens 2, as CNBC reported.
Craig Cincotta stated in an interview for The Verge “Earlier today, we announced a restructuring of Microsoft’s Mixed Reality organization. We remain fully committed to the Department of Defense’s IVAS program and will continue to deliver cutting-edge technology to support our soldiers. In addition, we will continue to invest in W365 to reach the broader Mixed Reality hardware ecosystem. We will continue to sell HoloLens 2 while supporting existing HoloLens 2 customers and partners”.
It is worth mentioning that this round of layoffs comes only a year after the tech giant laid off more than 10,000 people. After those changes, Satya Nadella claimed that the company is reconsidering its hardware portfolio. “Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners,”.
