Airports, TV stations, banks, and other businesses are confronted with general IT outages, causing universal disruption, after Windows systems have shown errors worldwide. On Friday, the 19th, companies in Australia running Microsoft Windows operating systems reported devices showing Blue Screen of Death (BSODs). After that, the reports of disruptions started appearing worldwide, including from the Netherlands, India, the US, and the UK.
Millions of netizens worldwide are experiencing the Blue Screen of Death error, which caused the system to suddenly shut down or restart. This error is caused by a recent CrowdStrike update that malfunctioned.
The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is a vital error screen on Windows operating systems. The cause is that the system crashes due to a tricky issue that prevents it from working safely. The computer restarts suddenly, and the unsaved data will likely be lost.
The company declared in a message that the error appeared due to a recent CrowdStrike update to malfunction and conflict with the Windows system. Crowdstrike is a cybersecurity platform that allows security answers to users and businesses.
Crowdstrike recognized their error and said, " Our Engineers are actively working to resolve this issue, and there is no need to open a support ticket”.
The outage, which began Thursday at 6 pm ET and affected Microsoft’s Central US region, paralyzed important systems for numerous airlines, including American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Allegiant, and Sun Country in the US. It also affected companies in India, such as IndiGo.
The company stated that the outage started with a division of its customers experiencing issues with multiple Azure services. Azure is a cloud computing platform that supplies services for building, deploying, and managing applications and services.
Microsoft comes with a status about the current situation. They promise to solve the issue with the highest priority and urgency. In a post on X, Microsoft 365 Status said that the company is ”investigating an issue impacting users ability to access various Microsoft 365 apps and services”. ”We’re working on rerouting the impacted traffic to alternate systems to alleviate impact in a more expedient fashion”.
Even if Microsoft confirmed the Azure outage was resolved early Friday, the disturbance served as a severe reminder of the potential impact when vital infrastructure depends on cloud services.
The breakdown affected banks, airlines, supermarkets, media outlets, and other businesses. Irish airline Ryanair declared that the company is experiencing challenges with its check-in processes: “We’re currently experiencing disruption across the network due to a Global 3rd party IT outage which is out of our control. We advise all passengers to arrive at the airport at least 3 hours before their scheduled departure time.”
Microsoft users globally are reporting the Blue Screen issue of Death, which caused the system to suddenly shut down. In this situation, people have started taking to social media to let others know about the problem.
Netizens began reacting with funny memes after the screens went blue and the message: ”Your PC ran into a problem…” appeared. As a result, the users began creating a series of memes to react to the outage. They made funny film shots and laughable GIFs and saturated the social media platforms with meme-worthy content on the Windows issue.
Some of the memes indicated the point of view of how the software engineers would be having a hard time at the tech company to solve the issue. Other netizens joined the trending hashtag by asking other people if they faced an outage, too.
While some people resonated with the complex issue that IT people faced, other people expressed they were happy with the problem as their systems crashed. They said ” Windows Crashed...! It seems everyone around the globe facing this issue.. wahhhh please don't resolve. Take ur own time."
With Microsoft's major outage, more than 1,000 flights and other businesses were affected, and the reactions weren’t late in appearing. One of the reactions comes from Tesla and SpaceX head Elon Musk, who takes this situation to his advantage and mocks his rival brands.
The director of overwatch at CrowdStrike, Brody Nisbet, posted on X that he is looking to fix the company's issue. This involves booting up Windows systems into safe mode, finding a file named ”C-00000291*.sys,” deleting it, and restarting the machine normally. He posted "There is a fix of sorts, so some devices in between BSODs should pick up the new channel file and remain stable.”
