(formerly Twitter) and asked the users whether Tesla should invest $5 billion in xAI. The majority of almost 1 million users voted for the investment.
xAI is an American artificial intelligence startup founded by Elon Musk in 2023. The artificial intelligence company has the goal `to understand the true nature of the universe.` The AI company stated this goal- xAI plans to create an AI competent in advanced mathematical reasoning. This goal is not present in current models.
`Looks like the public is in favor. Will discuss with Tesla board,` Musk said in a post on X on Thursday. In the poll, the CEO of Tesla said that Tesla’s board and shareholders would both need to agree before an investment. The question appeared after Elon Musk reported a fourth quarter of unsatisfying profit. During the earnings calls, they asked Elon Musk if the company would invest in xAI or a chatbot called Grok, which can be included in Tesla’s software.
By adding xAIs’ Grok chatbot into Tesla’s software, the company declares to improve their self-driving technology. They also aim to speed up their progress on robotaxis. The integration can enhance Tesla’s AI capabilities and infrastructure. This integration will lead to faster progress in autonomous driving technology.
Elon Musk launched xAI last year to compete with Microsoft- backed OpenAI. In 2018 Elon Musk left OpenAI, the artificial intelligence platform he co-founded. The reason was a potential conflict with Tesla, which is expanding AI software for self-driving vehicles. In April, Elon Musk said that xAI is hiring engineers from Tesla to achieve talent in the face of recruiting by OpenAI.
In May, Musk’s xAI company raised $6 billion in a series B funding round. This funding round valued the AI company at around $18 billion. Elon Musk has said before that he wants investors in X to own a quarter of xAI, which he acquired for $44 billion.
Previously, Elon Musk has asked the Tesla board and investors to sign off on disputable deals. Shareholders agreed that Tesla’s CEO acquired SolarCity in 2016. Elon Musk regrets the more than $2 billion bailout of SolarCity during a statement taken over. That time, he forced fellow directors to accept an overpriced deal.
