he ChatGPT owner is planning to launch a new AI flagship called Orion in the next months. Compared with the OpenAI two previous models which are the GPT-4o
and o1, the AI Orion will not be released for wide use. So, according to a source familiar with the release, the OpenAI Orion will provide access first for those companies that it works closely with to offer them the opportunity to create their products.
According to another source, it seems that the engineers from Microsoft are already preparing to host Orion on Azure in November, so we might see the launching of OpenAI Orion sooner than expected. It’s important to mention that Microsoft is an OpenAI partner in the developing process of various AI models.
The OpenAI Orion, powered by artificial intelligence, is seen as the successor of the OpenAI ChatGPT-4o, and currently is unclear if the company will call it eventually the GPT-5 model.
The OpenAI Orion could be up to 100 times more powerful than the current GPT-4o model. The OpenAI goal is to connect their LLMs in time to make a more powerful model that might be called artificial general intelligence also known as AGI.
Some previous reporting, states that OpenAI was using the o1, also named Strawberry, to collect synthetic data to further train the new AI flagship, Orion.

This timeline aligns with a post on X made by the OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, where he stated that he is “excited for the winter constellations to rise soon.”. It is believed that Sam Altman made this announcement as a teaser for this new AI flagship release, as Orion represents a winter constellation that is the most visible in the night from November to February.
The Orion release comes now at a crucial point for OpenAI because is experiencing a notable staff turnover, with the CTO Mira Murati recently announcing her departure, along with the CO-founder John Schulman switching to Anthropic.
