ccording to Seoul’s data protection agency, South Korea has requested a Meta GDPR fine from the Meta platforms $15.6 million, after they found out that
the social media platform Facebook had collected over time various sensitive and personal data of users to give to advertisers even though they did not have a legal basis for Meta data collection.
So, the Personal Information Protection Commission states that the U.S-based Meta platforms collected data and information from more than 980,000 South Korean meta users, which included sensitive info such as their beliefs, political views, and others.
It seems that the sensitive information from the Meta Data collection actions was used by about 4,000 in their strategies.
To provide further comments about this South Korea Meta issue, the Facebook owner was contacted but declined to give any comment.
"Specifically, it has been found that (Meta) analyzed user behavior data such as pages they liked and advertisements they clicked on Facebook and created and managed advertising themes related to sensitive information,", the Personal Information Protection Commission stated.

The agency also stated that this Meta data collection included various actions such as categorizing users, and identifying them as North Korean betrayers, or followers of a certain belief.
Also, the agency reported that in the South Korea Meta situation, the Facebook owner had denied several users’ requests to access their personal information and also failed to prevent the leakage of the data belonging to around 10 South Koreans in a hacking incident.
It seems that the Facebook owner is commonly facing similar situations about GDPR information. This is not the first time when the Facebook owner has faced a Meta GDRP fine. Meta has been fined recently, with $101.5M since they have been found responsible for a data breach from 2019 which led to passwords being exposed. This penalty was considered the biggest penalty received by Meta.
For now, we don’t know exactly how this Meta fine will be concluded, but we must wait for a valid response from the Facebook owner about the whole situation. Also, it’s not certain if the Meta platform will decide to pay this Meta GDPR fine eventually.
