philosophical Stephen Wolfram believes philosophers should work on AI Development exercise because it involves thinking about the effects that AI generation technology is having on humanity. And this kind of thinking is directly related to classical philosophy.
Stephen Wolfram is a mathematician and a scientist who grew up with a mother who was a philosophy professor at Oxford University. At first, in his teenage years, Stephen didn’t want to know anything about this field but as he grew up and became a wiser man, he saw a value in thinking seriously about things.
Now, his goal is to bring some philosophical rules in the AI development domain to help people better understand the issues and impact that a more capable generative AI can have on us.
Stephen Wolfram has an impressive portfolio filled with his work as he developed Mathematica, Wolfram Alpha, and the Wolfram Language, a powerful computational programming language.
He told TechCrunch “My main life work, along with basic science, has been building our Wolfram language computational language for the purpose of having a way to express things computationally that’s useful to both humans and computers,”
Supposing that the main work of philosophy is related to answering some big existential questions, Stephen sees this period as a good opportunity for philosophy expansion due to the influence of AI and all of the raised questions. In his vision, these questions that Generative AI is facing now, are some traditional philosophical questions.
He met with some master’s philosophers students from Ralston College in Savannah, Georgia. Stephen discussed how liberal arts and philosophy could merge with technology and artificial intelligence.
He also raised some interesting questions about AI like “If the AIs run the world, how do we want them to do that?; “How do we think about that process?”; “What’s the kind of modernization of political philosophy in the time of AI?”. These kinds of questions can be found in Plato's “Republic” seen by Stephen as the root of the philosophy.
Stephen Wolfram has been involved in computer science for about half a century and now sees a connection between philosophy and technology. This means that we should pay more attention to AI usage and consider it more than a math problem.
Maybe, the introduction of philosophy in the technological field is a key step to a better understanding of the true impact of AI generation in our society and daily life.
