new update in the social media world! X formerly Twitter, is about to launch a new feature to its app: the dislike button.
This feature is meant to incorporate user feedback in the user experience part of the app.
X is adding a new button in the user interface of the replies. Similarly to the heart button, representing the like feature, the dislike button is designed as a broken heart representing a negative reaction.
It appears that the dislike button will only be available to the replies, not to the posts themselves. This feature will enable user feedback to be more important than ever before. The dislike button on X formerly Twitter will rank the replies so that the most liked will appear first in the reply chain, leaving the most disliked at the bottom.
This is not the first time the social media platform was supposed to have this feature. In 2021, before Elon Musk’s acquisition, Twitter tested two features: the upvote and downvote buttons. Now, we will get only the new dislike button. It is not certain yet if the feature will be available only for replies or implemented to the posts. It seems that at this time is tested only for replies.
User feedback is more and more important for any social media platform these days, and for X is as well. The dislike button will help the fight against hate speech on social media. The replies that are not related to the post, or don’t give anything but hate will be at the bottom of the reply thread. The broken heart button will discourage hate speech.

This is not the only social media platform that has implemented the dislike button. YouTube had it for years. In recent times, the number of dislikes is not displayed for the viewers, only for creators. Facebook has post reactions similar to a dislike button: two of them being negative (sad and angry). Instagram has yet to implement such a feature.
Recently, X has made more changes to the like system on the social media platform. X formerly Twitter hides the likes from the public view. This allows users to like whatever they like without being judged for that and protecting their privacy.
Those changes are making X a more engaging social media platform, with less spam and junk content. The user feedback implemented will help the other user's experience with the app. This will improve conversation because people will not have to sort the replies themselves and read unrelated replies.
The dislike button on X is in the testing phase. We don’t know when it will be available to the masses, but we have reason to believe that the change will happen soon.
