It is questioning the collaboration with the Anthropic AI Claude AI startup, adding new regulative scrutiny to the investment capital overflowing AI field.
Almost two years after Microsoft supported OpenAI and caused an AI blossom by launching Chat GPT, antitrust controllers from all over the world have grown progressively concerned about various partnerships between smaller startups and big tech titans.
Contracts discussed during scrutiny include Microsoft’s collaboration with startups such as Inflection AI and Mistral AI and Alphabet's collaboration with smaller companies such as Anthropic and Cohere.
The British institution, The Competition and Markets Authority, declared that it solicits comments. It is examining whether the partnership between Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and Antropic Claude AI will lead to a “substantial lessening of competition” in the UK's AI services.
They also said they would welcome feedback from “any interested party” up until 13 August before deciding whether to request an official investigation.
Anthropic AI is an artificial intelligence start-up created for public benefit. It was founded in 2021 in San Francisco, California, by two former members of OpenAI, Daniela and Dario Amodei. In September 2023, Amazon declared that it would invest $4 billion in Anthropic AI, and the next month, Google AI claimed that it would invest $2 billion.

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority released a joint declaration next to its correspondents from the United States and the European Union, affirming that it will all work to protect equitable competition in the AI industry.
Alphabet company’s shares revised after the news, gaining 21% since the 2024 start.
Anthropic declared: “We intend to cooperate with the CMA and provide them with the complete picture of Google’s AI investment and our commercial collaboration. We are an independent company, and none of our strategic partnerships or investor relationships diminish the independence of our corporate governance or our freedom to partner with others.”
Google then stated, “It is committed to building the most open and innovative AI ecosystem in the world.”
The company continues by saying that Anthropic, which utilizes Google’s cloud computing facilities: “ is free to use multiple cloud providers and does, and we don’t demand exclusive tech rights.”
