When ChatGPT was launched in December 2022, everyone went crazy over it (and we still do!). Suddenly, we were all trying out this new AI tool that could generate any content possible – in just a few seconds. From creating poems to developing the code of a website, to giving you business ideas, and well… pretty much anything you would ask for. By that time, ChatGPT could give you answers to questions that Google or Bing could never answer.
While these search engines would simply provide you with a list of websites that might answer your questions, ChatGPT (which, by the way, GPT means “Generative Pertained Transformer”) was different. ChatGPT delivered direct answers by analyzing extensive datasets and leveraging a large language model (LLM) to generate responses that could resemble human responses. In fact, Gary Marcus, a leading voice in the AI world, said that ChatGPT is like an autocomplete on steroids.
But Google and Bing didn’t want to be left behind. So, they developed their own Generative AI tools – Google Bard and Bing Chat.
Soon after Open AI released ChatGPT, every organization – big or small – wanted to introduce AI into their products. Just so that they could keep up with this ever-changing industry. And it makes sense!
When Google launched Bard and Bing launched Bing Chat, we were already familiar with such generative AI-powered tools. Everyone was quickly introducing this generative AI feature to their products. Microsoft developed a “copilot” tool for the Microsoft 365 Suite, Grammarly writing assistant, and many others.
So, how are ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing Chat different from each other?
Some of us might’ve asked ourselves, “aren’t they just the same thing but with a different name?” And well, not really. Although ChatGPT and Bing Chat might use the same technology, when you input your text prompt, it won’t give you the same output. That’s just the general state of a generative AI tool and the algorithm on which it is based. So, let’s break down the difference between ChatGPT, Google Bard, and Bing Chat.
ChatGPT
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a generative AI tool created by Open AI, and it is based on the architecture of GPT-3.5. This allows the algorithm to receive, understand, and generate relevant answers to text inputs. ChatGPT is trained on a dataset of various topics that will enable it to form well-informed answers. However, its access to information is only limited up to 2021. So, some of the facts may not be accurate.
Even more so, ChatGPT can hold philosophical conversations with us. This trait is unique to ChatGPT as it was powered to a more extensive, complex, and intellectual text dataset. Yes, Google Bard and Bing Chat might also be able to respond to such questions. However, their answers are not as detailed as ChatGPT’s.
Compared to Google Bard and Bing Chat, ChatGPT cannot generate image outputs or provide outputs in other formats besides text. However, one of the best things about ChatGPT is that you can actually go back and see your history chats. This is extremely helpful if you’re like me and you have endless conversations with ChatGPT.
Google Bard
What is Bard?
Google Bard is a large language model AI-powered chatbot created by Google. Similar to ChatGPT, it can understand and respond to queries that are human-like and natural language. But what’s impressive about Google Bard is that it was linked to the Google Search engine, allowing Bard to access information live from the internet. Unlike ChatGPT.
Websites, blog articles, news, academic papers – Google Bard can retrieve information from each little part of the internet. So, does this make Google Bard the best generative AI tool? We don’t know. But we do know for sure that its ability to provide the most up-to-date data makes it the most trustworthy and accurate out of the three. This makes it perfect for various tasks or queries.
Bing Chat
What is Bing Chat?
Bing Chat is a conversational chatbot created by Microsoft that was developed using the same architecture and technology as ChatGPT. However, what Microsoft did differently with its AI generative algorithm is that it also integrated the Bing search engine – similar to what Google did with Bard.
Microsoft also went one step further with its tool and integrated it into the Microsoft Edge browser. This way, you’re literally just one click away from accessing the Bing Chat chatbot. Even more so, Bing Chat is a clear competitor to the other generative AI tools due to its link to the Microsoft ecosystem. This way, with Bing Chat, we can also generate images – unlike ChatGPT (although you can access Open AI’s other generative AI tool – DALL-E) and Google Bard.
ChatGPT vs. Google Bard vs. Bing Chat
When it comes to functionalities, we’ve seen that they are pretty similar – with specific features that make each tool unique. However, it’s time to question their helpfulness and trustworthiness.
A study conducted by Nielsen Norman Group demonstrated that Bing Chat rated lower than the other two on both scales – trustworthiness and helpfulness. Why exactly? Well, on multiple queries, it provided poor and broad answers that were mainly at the surface level. For this reason, due to its issues with information aggregation, it lowered Bing Chat’s score on these scales.
At the same time, Google Bard outperformed both AI generative tools on both scales. For this reason, based on NN/g’s study on how trustworthy and helpful these generative AI tools are, we can say that Google Bard is the best, followed by ChatGPT and Bing Chat.
Now, can we actually take these results at heart? Probably not. Each system is different in its architecture, training data, and algorithms. For this reason, the performance of these generative AI tools can vary depending on the nature of the query and the context in which they are presented.
While Google Bard may excel in some scenarios, ChatGPT and Bing Chat could be more effective in other situations. Ultimately, the best generative AI is subjective and hinges on the specific needs and preferences of the user.
