Ilya Sutskeve, co-founder of OpenAI and chief scientist, is leaving the company after almost a decade. Ilya Sutskeve was a former Google AI researcher and was one of the four board members who voted to fire CEO Sam Altman in November last year. And this was only the start of the chaos.
After Altman returned to Open AI as CEO, Sutskever's public presence slowly disappeared, including even their big announcement regarding GPT-4o , where he was absent.
Sutskever’s attempts to fire the CEO Sam Altman, the staff started to threaten to quit, leading to the reinstatement of Altman. Even more so, Altman confirmed Sutskever’s leaving on social media this Tuesday. Altman writes on his social media that “I am happy that for so long I got to be close to such [a] genuinely remarkable genius, and someone so focused on getting to the best future for humanity. ” and “OpenAI would not be what it is without him ”.

The company’s trajectory has been nothing short of miraculous, and I’m confident that OpenAI will build AGI that is both safe and beneficial ”. He also implied that something new will come: “I am excited for what comes next—a project that is very personally meaningful to me about which I will share details in due time .”
Sutskever's role as the chief scientist will be occupied by Jakub Pachocki, who has been working at OpenAI since 2017.
