ccording to various sources familiar with this matter, the SoftBank group plans to invest up to $25 billion in the ChatGPT technology. The Japanese company
seeks to expand more toward the artificial intelligence industry and as part of a wider partnership, SoftBank is expected to spend more than $40 billion on different artificial intelligence actions.
This significant SoftBank investment could potentially make the Janapese company the largest OpenAI investor, exceeding Microsoft's previous investment rounds. It seems that this deal has come right after the recent announcement of the Stargate project. Stargate represents a center project for OpenAI based in the U.S. territory that aims to expand the company’s artificial intelligence infrastructure in the next four years. It also represents a joint venture between Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank that aims to invest up to $500 billion to make sure that the U.S. will maintain its dominance in the global AI race over other powerful countries.
As the report states, the Japanese company intends to make an OpenAI investment of about $15 billion up to $25 billion in OpenAI, alongside its $15 billion funding in Stargate. The artificial intelligence company plans to distribute about $15 billion in Stargate because the SoftBank investment could cover OpenAI’s future costs.
The Stargate venture was revealed last week at the White House by the recently elected U.S. President Donald Trump, CEO of SoftBank, the CEO of OpenAI, and the Oracle Chairman.
However, not long after this announcement, DeepSeek, which was until then a hardly known startup, managed to disturb the artificial intelligence industry with its AI-free assistant, which the company claimed was developed at much lower costs compared to all U.S. competitors.

After that, the SoftBank share price dropped by about 12%, while the Nvidia giant has lost about $600 billion due to the fact that various investors consider that big investments in artificial intelligence technology are not necessary if other companies can make even more powerful AI models with much less funds.
OpenAI has been valued at about $157 billion in the recent funding round, making it part of the top valuable private countries globally. It should be mentioned that when asked about this SoftBank investment, both companies refused to give any comment.
