Up until now, access to xAI Grok has been limited to only premium users of the social network app. However, it seems like the platform is currently preparing us for the official release of the AI chatbot to free users as well.
A lot of people have been wondering what is Grok on X. Grok AI is an artificial intelligence assistant “with a twist of humor and a dash of rebellion.” It is powered by the xAI large language model (LLM) to provide answers, personalized results, and even generated images on the social media platform.
In the last couple of days, multiple users have posted about the possibility of X releasing a free version of Grok AI in certain countries and regions. Of course, it has some limitations compared to the premium version.
Tech Crunch has confirmed that users from New Zealand are the first to gain access to the free version. However, the social network app X will soon confirm more locations.
According to Swak on X, an artificial intelligence researcher, the limitations to use the free version of Grok AI will be:
- The X account must be at least 7 days old with a confirmed phone number linked to the account
- Up to 10 questions with Grok 2 every 2 hours
- Up to 20 questions with Grok-2 mini every 2 hours
- Up to 3 images to generate or analyze per day
Grok 2 was released by xAI in August, along with its capabilities to generate images. Soon later, the company also announced that the model is now able to understand images.
“We are excited to release an early preview of Grok-2, a significant step forward from our previous model Grok-1.5, featuring frontier capabilities in chat, coding, and reasoning. At the same time, we are introducing Grok-2 mini, a small but capable sibling of Grok-2.”
These Grok AI features were available on X only for its Premium and Premium+ database. However, with the latest xAI Grok news, it seems like the company wants to expand its user base. This way, xAI will be able to compete with other major LLM models on the market, such as Gemini, ChatGPT, and Claude.
The news came after xAI raised $6 billion in series B funding, which shows Elon Musk’s intention to create the best artificial intelligence software.
