new artificial intelligence-based model was revealed this Tuesday by the nonprofit AI research organization released OLMo2 which represents the second model
of the OLMo series ( Open Language Model).
Even though many open language models powered by artificial intelligence are already available, such as Meta’s Llama, the OLMo 2 aligns with the Open Source Initiative description of the open-source AI, because the tools and all the data that are used in its development process are publicly accessible.
It should be mentioned that the Open Source Initiative, which represents a long-running institution, was focused on completing the open-source new AI definition until October. And even the first OLMo model which was first released in February meets the criteria stated in the definition.
“OLMo 2 [was] developed start-to-finish with open and accessible training data, open-source training code, reproducible training recipes, transparent evaluations, intermediate checkpoints, and more. By openly sharing our data, recipes, and findings, we hope to provide the open-source community with the resources needed to discover new and innovative approaches.”, AI2 stated in their blog post.

Even more so, there are two different models in the OLMo 2 group. One of them has 7 billion parameters and is named OLMo 7B, and the other one features 13 billion parameters, obviously named OLMo 13B. These parameters are used to support problem-solving skills powered by new AI technology, and usually, a higher number of parameters means that the model will have a better performance compared with the one with a lower number of criteria.
Similar to other language models, OLMo 2 7B as well as 13B is able to solve text-based queries such as summarizing documents, answering various questions, and even writing code based on artificial intelligence technology.
“Not only do we observe a dramatic improvement in performance across all tasks compared to our earlier OLMo model but, notably, OLMo 2 7B outperforms LLama 3.1 8B.OLMo 2 [represents] the best fully-open language models to date.”, the Ai2 company stated.
It’s important to know that both OLMo Ai 2 language models along with their components are available to be downloaded from the company’s website. Also, they can be used commercially because both OLMo Ai 2 models are under Apache 2.0 license.
A debate has recently appeared about the safety of open language models, with reports of Chinese researchers using Meta Llama models to develop some defense tools. When asked about the potential abuse of OLMo, the Ai2 engineer, Dirk Groeneveld stated that the benefits exceed the risks.
It remains to be seen how this new open language model will be used in the industry. Stay tuned for more updates!
