types of telecommunications. For that reason, the Constellation French startup plans to make it possible by repurposing 5G technology to deliver a satellite broadband service similar to the Starlink one which uses already existing assets from telecom providers.
With the full name Constellation Technologies and Operations, this company is planning to propel a constellation of satellites low in the earth orbit to be able to work in direct relation with all telecom service providers and offer internet with high-speed access via small user terminals.
The Constellation company will be able to do this by repurposing the territorial 5G technology spectrum for connectivity that will be space-based and for example cellular signals will be able to reach to and from orbit if they are operated and managed in the right way. The only downside that some might see in this situation is that the Constellation Company will only provide the capacity and the terminals but the actual users and customers will pay the telecom providers.
“For the first time in the history of space and telecommunication, we are basically witnessing a convergence between space and terrestrial connectivity in terms of performance and price,” the Constellation founder and CEO Charles Delfieux stated.
Delfieux is an engineer by profession and he spent his career working at the World Bank as a program manager for structuring and financing big infrastructure projects in developing countries. So, he saw in reality how the access to internet is still an issue for millions of people, and with the support from an investor he managed to found the Constellation company in 2022.
He thinks that connectivity should have universal internet access regardless of location, and his plan includes operating in the very low orbit of the Earth to boost the overall performance of the system and also to repurpose the 5G technology spectrum for space communication services.
By doing this, the CEO of Constellation will help all telecom providers monetize the full spectrum of the 5G technology while competing with companies such as SpaceX and Kuiper.
Currently, Constellation obtained a $10.2 million seed round to make its plans possible and estimates that this business plan will need 1,500 satellites to be able to offer global coverage along with a performance rate of 150 Mbps downlink, 50 Mbps uplink and a response time of under 30 milliseconds.
