reproduced the design of Apple’s Weather App. Andy Allen, the creator of NotBoring Software, first discovered this, as they also have available a popular weather app among other features and utilities.
Andy Allen wrote in a post he made on X that “This is a "weather app" using the new Make Designs feature and the results are basically Apple's Weather app (left). Tried three times, same results.”. He went even further on and accused Figma of training their AI model with already existing apps.
In response, Dylan Field said “As we shared at Config last week - as well as on our blog, our website, and many other touchpoints - the Make Design feature is not trained on Figma content, community files, or app designs. In other words, the accusations around data training in this tweet are false.” on a post from X.
This feature has been available for Figma users since its last update, being presented at config 2024 as “Just describe what you need, and the feature will provide you with a first draft,”. Which seemed to be a wish come true for all UI UX designers, and not only.
The purpose of this feature was to create designs faster and create a more productive environment for Figma users, helping them get the inspiration they need. “How does Make Design work? As we have explained publicly, the feature uses off-the-shelf LLMs, combined with design systems we commissioned to be used by these models. The problem with this approach (...) is that variability is too low.” wrote Dylan Field on an X post, last week.
Yet, the feature was enabled as a result of the incident and other complaints regarding the issue. Even more so, some UI UX designers were not too happy about Figma’s new update announced at Config, reporting that this might lead to job losses.
This feature will remain unavailable until further notice Field also writes “I have asked our team to temporarily disable the Make Design feature until we are confident we can stand behind its output. The feature will be disabled when our US-based team wakes up in a few hours, and we will re-enable it when we have completed a full QA pass on the underlying design system.”.
