euters reported that Indonesia just announced that it is banning the sales of Google smartphones after it banned Apple’s iPhone 16.
Indonesia is forbidding the sales of Google Pixel 9 as a response to their new measures, which require the company to contain locally manufactured components in order to be allowed to sell them. The same situation also happened with the new Apple phone.
Indonesia has now blocked the sales of Google Pixel Phones due to Alphabet’s not respecting their rules regarding the percentage of components manufactured in Indonesia which should be at least 40%.
Google’s response from Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, the industry ministry spokesperson, “We are pushing these rules so that there's fairness for all investors in Indonesia," also added, "Google's products have not adhered to the scheme we set, so they can't be sold here.”.

Google also added that their phones are currently not being sold and distributed in Indonesia. Febri also mentioned that Google Pixel phones can be bought overseas. This blockage comes after Indonesia already banned the sales of iPhone 16 for domestic use, as the company did not the local continent rules.
This procedure comes as a way of encouraging big companies to create collaborations between local producers and suppliers in order to sustain Indonesia’s economy. However, Google and Apple are not among Indonesia's top smartphone producers. The top phone providers are OPPO, the Chinese phone maker, and Samsung.
The downside is that Indonesia has one of the biggest tech-savvy populations, making it a key player in the phone industry target for sales.
