orldcoin is a crypto project co-founded by Sam Altman that scans people’s eyeballs for “proof of personhood”. The startup announced this Thursday that they
have eliminated the “coin” from their name and are not called only “world”.
The startup, Tools for Humanity, also made public its new generation of new iris-scanning “Orbs” and other helpful tools that have the purpose of creating an easier living.
Alex Blania, the CEO and co-founder of the startup Tools and Humanity talked about the project’s old name, saying that it “just doesn’t work anymore”. The name change suggests a wider territory for the startup, going beyond cryptocurrency.
During a press conference, Alex Blania reported for TechCrunch that Sam Altman spent a good amount of time working on the startup and developing its mission. Yet, Blania did not eliminate the situation in which World’s cryptocurrency would be incorporated into ChatGPT one day.
“Well, he’s a co-founder and he’s been so from the beginning. So, we talk a couple of times a week. He’s involved in all the decisions” Alex Blania said in the tech conference.
He also added “Of course, he’s focused on OpenAI,” and “How tied is World’s success to OpenAI? I think actually not at all. I think these are two very separate missions, and I think AI is heading where it’s heading, and we think what we built here is very important infrastructure for the world, and that will not change.”

The project World follows a future where advanced artificial intelligence programs will become so good that it will be impossible to tell whether or not they are real. So, this is where the startup and its project come in handy when projects such as OpenAI become too “real”.
And this sounds strange to you, well you are not the only one. Countries from around the world have stopped the startup from working in Kenya, and some countries in the EU. The suspensions of Worldcoin have been due to security and financial concerns. Kenya even opened an investigation where they eventually let World continue its operations. However, some of the investigations that took place in the EU are still ongoing.
This Thursday, Altman and Blania talked about the roundup on stage. The Orb is the first and second step when it comes to creating a distributed ownership network with blockchain. The next step is to scale the product and lastly to redistribute the positive benefits of AI.
Another announcement made by World this Thursday is that they will be launching a new app and to scan as many eyeballs across the globe.
