t seems that the photo-sharing app powered by the TikTok ByteDance company will soon be closed down after TikTok Notes was launched last year in a testing
version for Canada, Australia, and Vietnam.
Beginning on May 8, this photo-sharing app, which was developed in order to be a competitor for Instagram, will shut down in order to redirect all the resources and technologies to Lemon8, an app that is also in the ByteDance portfolio. TikTok Notes and Lemon8 have multiple similarities and features with almost the same functionalities, so ByteDance decided to close down the Instagram competitor in order to improve Lemon8 and make it popular among worldwide users.
Even though TikTok didn’t offer the exact reason why TikTok Notes will close all its operations, it is quite obvious that this Instagram competitor struggled to gain new users as of December 2024 TikTok Notes had about 12.5 million monthly active users globally.
“We’re excited to bring the feedback from TikTok Notes to Lemon8 as we continue building a dedicated space for our community to share and experience photo content, designed to complement and enhance the TikTok experience,”, a TikTok spokesperson stated for TechCrunch

So the social media platform has announced all the TikTok Notes users via an app notice, which stated that this decision to close the Instagram competitor app was made after a lot of efforts to keep its operations workable. So, the social media app advised all users to download and save all the app data and change their focus towards Lemon8, because it offers a lot more features compared to TikTok notes.
Lemon8 social media app was first introduced in 2020 to Japanese users, and after just a few months the app's operations were extended in Southeast Asia and the U.S. Lemon8 is planning to provide a similar experience to Instagram and Pinterest, and allows users to share slideshows along with photo collections, using various creative tools such as filters, effects, stickers or text templates. Even more so, this social media app provides the option to browse for content using “Following” and “For You” features.
But, right now, the TikTok situation is quite unstable in the U.S. because Donald Trump requires the parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app to a non-Chinese buyer or face a TikTok ban. Now, all TikTok users are concerned about the app’s future in the country and are wondering if this social media app will continue to work.
Stay tuned to find out soon if TikTok is going to be banned in the U.S. or if ByteDance will close a deal soon to maintain the app’s operations.
