tariffs to 10%. This order has already come into effect and the U.S. stock market experienced almost immediately a spike after his post.
However, while other Trump tariffs were paused or even lowered to 10%, China is excluded from this, and Trump will keep these great tariffs on the world’s second-largest economy. It should be mentioned that he not only decided to keep the tariffs but increased them from 104% to 125% after the Chinese government announced that they would impose revengeful tariffs against the U.S.
"Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World's Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,", the U.S. President wrote in his Truth Social post.
So, moments after Trump’s announcement, Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, along with Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, offered additional information and told reporters that the universal tariff rate in this 90-day window would reach only 10%, excluding China tariffs.
“At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, are no longer sustainable or acceptable,”, he also stated.
The 10% tariff rate applies for now the European Union, but we don’t know for sure what’s next after the 90-day window ends. Most of the countries will probably negotiate with Trump’s administration to decide the final Trump tariffs.
Also, Canada and Mexico are not included in Trump’s tariffs plan, and will not experience a 10% tariff, as the White House officials stated. Besides, the goods that are coming from these two countries will have applied a 25% Trump tariff, only if they are not complying with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement.
But why did the U.S. president make a new decision so quickly after the Trump Tariffs plan went into effect?
"Well, l thought that people were jumping a little bit out of line, they were getting yippy, you know? The bond market is very tricky. I was watching it. But if you look at it now, it's, it's beautiful. The bond market right now is beautiful. But yeah, I saw last night where people were getting a little queasy.", Donald Trump explained Wednesday afternoon at a White House event.
The current situation remains a little bit unstable for the Chinese government, but stay tuned to find out if China will have a response to this tariff increase!
