he TSMC ( Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) has decided to suspend the AI chip shipments to the chip designer Sophgo because a TSMC chip was found
in a Huawei processor powered by artificial intelligence.
It seems that Sophgo ordered some AI chips from TSMC similar to the one found in the Huawei chip Ascend 910B. If currently Huawei company is not able to purchase the technology due to U.S. national security restrictions, it can’t be determined yet how the AI chip turned out to be part of a Huawei product.
The Sophgo company stated this Sunday on their website that they are operating under all laws and regulations and confirmed that they didn’t engage in any business with Huawei. Now, the Sophgo company is associated with the cryptocurrency mining equipment company Bitman and stated that they even offered in-depth reports to TSMC to prove their innocence.
In this situation, TSMC refused to make any comments, but at the same time, the U.S. Department of Commerce stated that they couldn’t confirm if an investigation is currently in process.
It should be mentioned that last Tuesday TechInsights discovered that a TSMC chip was found in the Huawei chip Ascend 910B. After they were alerted by this strange finding, TSMC decided to notify the U.S.

According to the world’s largest contract chipmaker, also known as TSMC, Huawei has not been supplied with AI chips since mid-September 2020. Also, the Huawei company stated last Tuesday that they have not performed AI chip manufacture or any other chips with TSMC since the U.S. new rules on export in 2020.
In 2020, the U.S. decided to expand its authority in exports and stop the shipments of items that are foreign-produced and are in direct connection with U.S. technology or software. For now, the Huawei chip Ascend 910B released two years ago in 2022 remains the most advanced AI chip made by a Chinese company.
The investigations remain in process, and we must wait for further details offered by one of the involved companies. Stay tuned for more in-depth details about this situation!
