alternative that nobody seems to already have created. And, Twenty seems to be the company that can do so.
Twenty is trying to build an open-source CRM that can be an alternative to Salesforce. The startup has been mentioning a new CRM platform that will be available on GitHub and under an AGPLv3 license.
Twenty is building a community of CRM and open-source enthusiasts who are ready to try an open-source CRM. Twenty does not yet have all the features that Salesforce has, yet the company is looking into expanding.
The startup founder has previously been working on a startup named Luckey which was later acquired by Airbnb. Luckey had the features of a CRM designed for rental properties for vacations, both for the hosts and the guests. So, when the three co-founders left the startup and thought about starting a new startup, they observed a growing trend in the market –CRM’s. Yet, none of them were trying to start an open-source CRM.
Felix Malfoit, Twenty’s co-founder, spoke in an interview for TechCrunch about their startup, saying about their competitors that “They didn’t see the point of open source at the time, it was more of a constraint. I think that’s because there was no GitHub, there was no community,”
Even more so he added “I think that in every category, there will be an open source leader, and the more a category depends on network effects, ecosystems, and extensibility, the more effective open source will be,” and. “We’re not there yet, but that’s what I believe. It’s my long-term thesis,”
So, this is why Twenty tries to be different and develop a Flexible platform that can adapt to the customers' needs. The best part, customers or users can create their own customed entries in the CRM or customizable fields for your projects and specific needs.
“Building a CRM is a daunting task, especially for us because of the way we’ve chosen to do it. We’re building a platform, and we’re not taking any shortcuts. In fact, we still need to work on workflows, automation, and more” Malfait said about Twenty. Hoping that they will develop an ecosystem that has plugins and extensions for every user’s needs.
Malfait sees Salesforce as a flexible data model, a programming language and a front-end customization framework. “So when you have these three bricks you can store data, do logic on the back end, and display the result as you like,” Malfait said. “It means that you can do everything. And that’s what we want to enable in the long term.”
At the moment Twenty has raised two rounds of funding from over 50 investors reaching $5 million in total. The company is now developing and growing its product constantly looking forward to new opportunities.
