aymo, the self-driving car company, is planning to use data directly from Robotaxis to train the generative AI models, along with interior camera videos that
include the rider’s identities. According to the researcher Jane Manchun Wong, this information is included in an unreleased version of the Waymo privacy policy, which indeed raises concerns about the riders’ identities and their behavior used for artificial intelligence training.
In this private policy draft, the company also revealed that it can use shared rider data in order to create personalized ads, but Waymo is already collecting various personal data in order to improve its services.
However, it should be mentioned that this new Waymo self-driving privacy policy will give riders the option to disable one or multiple features that use, sell, or share their personal information to train AI.
“The feature, which is still under development, will not introduce any changes to Waymo’s Privacy Policy, but rather will offer riders an opportunity to opt out of data collection for [machine learning] training purposes,” the Waymo spokesperson, Julia Ilina, stated for TechCrunch.
According to the privacy policy page that was leaked on the X platform, the Waymo self-driving company will have different options to share the user’s data in order to improve all app functionalities, along with customizing its services, products, or ads for Waymo riders. But, the good news is that riders who don’t want to have their data shared with different third parties can disable and opt out from these anytime, directly from the settings menu.

“Opt out of Waymo, or its affiliates, using your personal information (including interior camera data associated with your identity) for training [generative AI],” as stated in the unreleased privacy policy draft.
The Waymo self-driving company’s spokesperson states that all these new privacy policies are created to ensure a safer environment for Waymo riders and make sure that they will find their lost items. Also, in an emergency case, the company can check if all the self-driving car rules are followed by the company’s standards.
“That policy explicitly states Waymo will not share personal information we collect through our products and services with other Alphabet companies for them to use for any purpose other than: with a users’ consent, in connection with providing services to Waymo, or as otherwise described in the Privacy Policy’s sharing section.”, Julia Ilina also stated.
