ue to the recent situation about the potential TikTok ban in the U.S. territory, other social media apps are looking to gain popularity.
A new Chinese social platform, called Xiaohongshu captured the user’s attention and became the no.1 app in the free apps section of the U.S. App Store.
Also known as RedNote in English, this new social media app is highly promoted among TikTok creators, which encourages their followers to switch to this platform. Even though the TikTok ban in the U.S. territory is planned to take effect on January 19, we don’t know for sure if the most popular social media platform will be truly banned in the U.S. as some rumors state that Elon Musk is planning to close a deal with the Chinese parent ByteDance.
Xiaohongshu or RedNote was initially launched in 2013 and is currently a perfect alternative for all TikTok creators looking to continue content-making while keeping their community of followers. The app's layout is very similar to the Pinterest app and was initially considered to be the Chinese alternative to the Instagram social platform. Available on both iOS and Android, the app features a combination of photos, short videos, and text posts, which are accessible through “follow, “explore”, or “nearby” feeds.
Right now, RedNote has about 300 million active users with a percentage of 79% of women users, and managed to attract the investor's interest. So far, the RedNote social media app has secured about $917 million in venture funding from important sponsors such as Alibaba, Tencent, ZhenFund, and others. In 2024 after a secondary share sale, the company was valued at $17 billion.
