Perplexity AI revealed two versions of the new API from which developers and enterprises can choose. First, the company offers a cheaper but faster version called simple Sonar, and another pricier tier with better performance for complex requests called Sonar Pro API.
“While most generative AI features today have answers informed only by training data, this limits their capabilities. To optimize for factuality and authority, APIs require a real-time connection to the Internet, with answers informed by trusted sources.”, Perplexity AI stated in their blog post.
It’s important to mention that according to the company, this new Perplexity Sonar API allows both enterprises and developers to customize the AI search engine sources.
Perplexity Sonar and Sonar Pro API can now be accessed in other apps such as Zoom, which has already integrated the new Sonar Pro API into its AI assistant for all video conferences. So, the Sonar Pro API integration allows users to have fast answers from Zoom’s chatbot without the need to leave the video conference window.
The Perplexity Sonar base tier is cheaper and quicker for simple questions because uses a lightweight model compared with the Sonar Pro API. Perplexity Sonar has already fixed costs, with $5 for every 1,000 searches and also $1 for every 750,000 words users will type in the new Perplexity AI model. It’s important to mention that this API will take $1 for every 750,000 words the artificial intelligence tool offers.
On the other hand, Perplexity Pro API is able to offer more precise answers while being capable of processing difficult queries. So, this Perplexity tier will be able to operate multiple searches along with a user prompt, so here the prices are uncertain. So, same as the Perplexity Sonar, the Pro version costs $5 for every 1,000 searches and $3 for every 750,000 typed in the artificial intelligence model. Additionally, the users will need to pay $15 for every 750,000 words that the Pro model will offer.
According to the Perplexity company, their new API model exceeds the most popular AI models from companies such as OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic making it the model with the best performance.
“Sonar is the most affordable search API product on the market. Use it to build generative search, powered by real-time information and citations, into your apps.” as Perplexity AI stated in their X post.
