What is a VPN?
First off, a VPN, also known as a Virtual private network is a network architecture that is used for virtually extending a private network. It is a tool that has the purpose of securing a private connection over the internet as it encrypts data and routing with the use of a remote server. It is like a shield that hides your location and shows another chosen one. It hides your IP address and it shows another one, as if you are in the show location, making your true location unrecognizable. So, it can serve as a protective measure if you do not want your location to be disclosed.
When you use a VPN, a so-called “tunnel” is created and you obtain an encrypted connection between your device location and a remote server operated by the used VPN. So, all your internet traffic and information will come through this tunnel, and you will receive information as usual. The same happens with the data coming back to your device – from the internet to the VPN server, then it goes through the encrypted connection and after that back to your device.
When did VPNs Appear?
Hirst-ever VPN technology was developed in 1996 when one of Microsoft’s employees developed PPTP. The new creation made possible a more secure private connection between a user’s device and the internet. And, only a few years later in 1999, Microsoft published the exact specification of their discovery.
At first, VPNs, or virtual private networks, were used primarily by businesses in order to access private networks. With this procedure the company members were able to access data from anywhere in the world, looking like they were at the office. It is a more secure manner in which data and files can be shared, making possible the possibility to share files between offices. And for the early 2000s, this was a dream come true. It created a safe space for business members and encouraged better collaboration.

Choosing the right VPN can be the difference point when it comes to a more secure network and data connection. However, with so many VPNs available on the market, choosing the right one for your needs can sometimes be harder than you'd think. Even more so, some VPNs have extra security features such as split tunneling or multi-hop.
