The Federal Communications Commission proposed a $6 million Fine for the ones responsible for the calls.
In January, during the elections in New Hampshire, many received a phone call that encouraged voters not to exert their obligation and not go to the polls. This call was said to be from the president, using a voice clone powered by AI.
We all know and see the advancement of artificial intelligence, and although the creation of voice clones is possible, its use is prohibited. Voice clones use real speech fed to the software, and in just a few minutes, you will have the voice of whoever you want. However, using Joe Biden's voice to suppress voters and change the outcome of the election through robocalls is illegal.
Loyaan Egal, the chief of the Federal Communications Commission, stated, “We will act swiftly and decisively to ensure that bad actors cannot use U.S. telecommunications networks to facilitate the misuse of generative AI technology to interfere with elections, defraud consumers, or compromise sensitive data.”
The main suspect is the political consultant Steve Kramer. Yet, he did not act alone, as he declared that he was helped by Life Corporation. This company had been previously accused of illegal robocalls. However, Kramer and its accomplice have not faced any criminal charges.
